After leaving medical school graduates will enter a two-year integrated Foundation Programme based on six four month posts in the same NHS Trust.

These programmes will enable doctors to acquire and demonstrate the core competencies required of a doctor in the 21st century and will include an understanding of different settings in which medicine is practiced. In particular these will include the core clinical skills required to identify and care for the acutely ill patient as well as communication, team working and IT skills.

The Foundation Programmes at East Lancashire have been carefully constructed to provide a wide range of educational opportunities both in the Trust and within the community.

The Medical Education Centre also provides all the administrative support to the Foundation Programme Director, Foundation Tutors and Foundation Programme doctors including regularly updating doctorsí portfolios on Health Education North West's website, collating assessments, arranging teaching programmes and monitoring attendance at teaching sessions.
